Nestled in a peaceful valley, Kiowa is a small rural town located in the Western portion of Elbert County. Named after the Kiowa Indians in the mid 1850's, it has been the County Seat since 1874 and is dominantly ranching and farming country.
The main street is typical of the small towns that many of us knew and the local park is an excellcent place for the kids to play. The gathering spot for the adults is frequently the "Saloon" right across the street from the court house. It's not hard to find, it is the only saloon in town. Spectacular Rocky Mountain views exist around this area and a number of creeks pass through the area. The topography consists mainly of rolling grasslands with treed areas in and around town, and the many ranches throughout the county. Cattle ranching is common on the same land where the plains buffalo used to winter. The wide open spaces with mild weather are in the heart of outstanding hunting and wildlife watching and photography. Deer are often observed in the area and antelope roam freely across vast prairies of the county, often seen mingling with herds of cattle. Yes, this is the land where the deer and the antelope play and the skies are not cloudy all day. Ducks, geese, ring-necked pheasant, bobwhite quail. the piping plover, least tern, hawks, Bald and Golden Eagles inhabit the area. Water based recreation is close by. Some of the best boating and fishing opportunities to be found anywhere in Colorado are nearby at "The Great Plains Reservoirs" of over 23 square surface miles. The natural setting of the reservoirs and the mild climate make fish abundant in all of the reservoirs including wiper, saugeye, walleye, crappie, channel catfish, largemouth bass, small mouth bass, bullhead, drum, and carp. Fish weighing in excess of five pounds are common. All of these lakes have perfect places for camping, picnicking, sailboating, windsurfing, and many other recreational activities. The lakes also provide important habitat for the ducks and geese (Canadian and Snow Geese) that fly the High Plains Central Flyway. Rich in history, the pastoral beauty of Kiowa is easily accessible from Denver or Colorado Springs. Kiowa and the surrounding area is the answer for those folks who desire a taste of "the way it was" with vast prairies literally unscarred by urban blight. Visible wildlife and scenic vistas provide welcome relief from the snarl and congestion of crowded cities. Beautiful sunrises are common and the days continue with pristine beauty, crystal blue skies. Stop and visit us and enjoy the openness and freedom of the open prairie vistas and marvel at the ability to see "forever". |
