The State of Kansas, and more specifically WaKeeney, has a rich heritage left by a hearty breed of pioneers that settled the high plains. WaKeeney is located exactly halfway between Denver and Kansas City. Maintaining a reputation of a community with pride, WaKeeney is a small Kansas town with natural beauty and local hospitality. Founded in 1879, the town originated with a professional prairie town design by two Chicago land companies of Warren and Keeney.

For decades upon decades Kansas has been the path way for the call of the majestic Rockies. Each year, we the residents of WaKeeney serve the river of people traveling back and forth from the Rockies. WaKeeney, the county seat of Trego County is on I-70, US283 and the Union Pacific. Visitors traveling along the interstate often complain that this part of Kansas is flat. In reality, the area is full of beautiful valleys that are best seen by going north from WaKeeney. Trego County is also famous for its upland game hunting and the millions of Monarch Butterflies that migrate through Kansas each fall.

A variety of activities occur all year long with one of the highlights being the Christmas season. Since Wakeeney was founded, its reputation as "The Queen City of the High Plains" has changed to "The Christmas City of the High Plains."

With the largest Christmas tree and lighting display between Kansas City and Denver, the entire city has become a legend in Western Kansas. This spectacular display can be seen between the Saturday following Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

Every year since 1950, the community has gathered together to tie the fresh, fragrant pine boughs to the beautiful 35 foot tree that stands majestically at the intersection of Main Street and Russell Avenue in WaKeeney during the Christmas season. A canopy of sky blue lights radiates from the ivory star that crowns the tree. The street posts and cross garlands are also decorated with fresh greens along with hand crafted wreaths, bows and bells.

Although the decorations are only displayed for a couple of months the spirit of Christmas is present the entire year. The business community as well as the residents of WaKeeney are always ready to lend a helping hand and a friendly smile.

Summertime finds WaKeeney an enjoyable place to stay. With the hustle and bustle of Trego County fair, fairgoers find time for recreation including our free tennis courts, softball diamonds, municipal swimming pool, horse shows, car races at WaKeeney Speedway or a round of golf at the finest grass green golf course in Western Kansas with club and cart rentals for visitors.

For those who have not enjoyed our hospitality, The City of WaKeeney invites you to spend a few hours or a day visiting local attractions and some of the area historical sites. Wakeeney has the distinction of having two old- fashioned soda fountains on Main Street. Be a kid again and enjoy an old fashioned ice cream soda! This is the perfect break for the traveler!
